The Things You Should Know About Hypnosis

December 31st, 2009 Comments off

Hypnosis and its arm, hypnotherapy, have been the subject of a lot of myths created by popular imagination. Some regard them to be black magic whereas others discard them as pseudo science. Some of the popular misconceptions linked with hypnosis and the reality behind them are discussed here.

Hypnosis has nothing to do with black magic of any kind. Psychology and several other scientific disciplines have an important role to play in the hypnotic procedure, and it is very simple to acquire and practice. People refuse to believe in hypnosis even after watching participants effectively experiencing its power in public sessions. They hold that the subjects who have undergone hypnosis are mentally not powerful enough to withstand the influence of the practitioner. But this again is a complete fallacy. Hypnosis can in fact be successfully practised on people who are mentally tough and are trying hard to resist the spell.

Another myth is that hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness, which again is a serious misconception. A hypnotized person is totally conscious of his environment. During the hypnotic state, the subject calms down entirely and is therefore able to focus fully on the inputs provided by the practitioner.

Some scientific discoveries have stated that only about 5% of humanity is capable of being hypnotized, which is the third misconception on this list. The scientists are somewhat true in their own way, because they attempted hypnotising the group by the same hypnosis technique without acknowledging individual differences in character and temperament. Hypnosis can’t be oversimplified like that and works only if there are different methodologies for different characters.

Meditation and hypnosis are usually thought to be the same by people. However, interaction between the subject and the practitioner is indispensable in hypnosis, while meditation is like a communion with the self without any external interaction involved. The state of trance is not a hypnotic state either. The person doesn’t communicate to achieve a state of trance, whereas hypnosis is not possible without communication.

A majority of people believe that it is impossible to bring about alterations in one’s appearance and behaviour through hypnosis training or hypnotherapy. Hypnosis obviously cannot achieve something that is abnormal to the body. But it can bring about an improvement in physical health by changing behavioural patterns like overeating and chain smoking by raising inspiration levels in an individual.

If an individual believes in all the misconceptions that prevail regarding hypnotherapy and doesn’t venture to participate in a hypnotic session, then he will himself block his way to a happier and healthier life.
